Alexander Girard

Alexander Girard, born May 24th, 1907, is one of the biggest names in mid-century textile design. Alexander Girard is widely known for his work with Herman Miller and collaborations with Charles and Ray Eames and George Nelson for whom he designed fabrics for their designs.

Textile design was the main focus of Girard’s work and as head of the textile division at Herman Miller’s company; he designed a mass collection of textiles that reflected his love for festive colours and abstract and geometric patterns. Alexander Girard created a number of textile patterns for the company; each made at a high level of industrial quality and durability.

Alexander Girard initially established a fabric collection based on his architectural training. His first fabric line consisted of plain upholsteries and geometric drapery prints—stripes, circles, and triangles. He went on to create many more patterns and designs, largely inspired by folk art. His sense of style was shocking and exciting for the time and introduced the bright colours found in his work rather successfully to the public.

Alexander Girard’s work also includes designing all aspects La Fonda del Sol restaurant in New York (from the tiles to the furniture), the Herman Miller Showplace: Textiles and Objects, Braniff Airlines and the Girard Foundation which houses a remarkable collection of artefacts of folk art, popular art, toys and textiles, collected by himself and his wife Susan Girard. In 1993 he bequeathed the collection to the Vitra Design Museum along with the contents of his studio, which are now on display for all to see.
