Charles and Ray Eames have designed numerous classic pieces of furniture for Vitra in the UK. The most iconic would be the Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman, initially designed as a modern interpretation of the traditional English club armchair. Designed in 1956, the Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman conveys the impression of a well used baseball glove which invites the user to sit back and relax. The accompanying Ottoman provides an extra level of comfort when reclining with your feet elevated. Other classics from Charles and Ray Eames are the Eames House Bird, Eames Elephant and the Eames Hang It All.

Charles and Ray Eames also designed a large part of Vitra’s Office range, including the Aluminium Group chairs and Soft Pad Group which are one of the most popular choices for authentic designer office furniture.

History of Vitra

Vitra is a Swiss (originally German) manufacturer of designer furniture, founded in 1950 by Willi Fehlbaum in Weil am Rhein, Germany. Fehlbaum began working with Charles and Ray Eames, George Nelson and Alexander Girard to produce authentic designer furniture for the home environment. Each designer bought something new and exciting to Vitra, pushing the boundaries of modern design and technologies to create the pieces that are still with us today.

In the mid to late 60’s Vitra teamed up with Verner Panton, whose spatial installations and geometric fabric patterns intrigued them. Vitra and Verner Panton worked together on one of his designs for a new type of cantilever chair. After several attempts the classic Panton chair was born. Formed from a single piece of plastic, the Panton Chair forms an ‘S’ shape that supports itself without the need of the traditional four legs. Vitra have since added a child’s version, Panton Junior in an array of bright colours.

Other famous designers in the Vitra UK product portfolio include George Nelson, Isamu Noguchi and Alexander Girard. George Nelson’s range of clocks includes the Vitra Ball clock (1948), Vitra Sunburst (1949) and during the 1950’s the Vitra Sunflower, Vitra Eye and Vitra Spindle clocks. George Nelson’s Coconut chair is also manufactured by Vitra and is one of the many miniatures available from the Vitra Design Museum.

The Noguchi Coffee Table designed by Isamu Noguchi in 1944 remains a popular Vitra product. Many “knock offs” have been tried but failed to equal the quality of the Vitra Noguchi Coffee table and thickness of the glass makes the original unmatchable. Vitra engrave the designer’s signature on the top of the glass top to certify it is an authentic Vitra UK product. 

Alexander Girard’s love of textiles, print and colour can be seen in a number of his products for Vitra. The Vitra Wooden Dolls show Girard’s love for pattern and colour in the form of small decorative items. Girard’s cushions, available to compliment the stunning Vitra Suita Sofa, also show the delicate patterns and colour palettes that he so loved. His work helps distinguish and mark Vitra as being great visionaries when it comes to design.
